ASC is a general topic database in which you can find something on just about any topic. Both academic and substantive news & opinion periodicals are covered. It is updated frequently.
In addition to some scholarly literature, Google Scholar is helpful in finding out-of-the-way items like technical reports, conference papers, and pre-prints. However, because it is not comprehensive and items may not have been vetted through peer-review, it should be used wisely and in conjunction with other databases.
Carrolline is the database for the paper and electronic book holdings of Grasselli Library. It may also be used to search across the holdings of college and university libraries throughout Ohio by using the OhioLink button. The OhioLink button will appear near the top of the screen as you are searching Carrolline.
Carrolline and other library catalogs can be searched by subjects in two ways. One is by KEYWORD searching, in which you are using the words and phrases that occur to you -- as well as the words and phrases that you are discovering in the process of research. Another way is by SUBJECT, in which you are using the words and phrases that libraries use (subject headings). Here are some examples to try of subject headings relating to Military Science in a search using the SUBJECT search option:
*United States -- History -- Civil War
*Gettysburg
*Lincoln, Abraham (proper names are entered in reverse order)
*Military art and science
Punctuation and capitalization are optional when entering subject heading.
With the exception of the United States and Canada, Historical Abstracts covers the writing of historians on modern history from 1450 on. For U.S. and Canada see America: History and Life above.
JSTOR is a full-text database of the content of journals and books. It also includes images and primary sources. As with any database, use the HELP options to become acquainted with its bells and whistles. Learning about devices such as proximity searching will be helpful to you in searching JSTOR effectively.
