What is the Curiosity Lab?

The Curiosity Lab at the Grasselli Library & Breen Learning Center at John Carroll University is a makerspace for the JCU community. It is an open and collaborative work space dedicated to creativity, making, curiosity, and sharing ideas, using high tech to no tech tools.

Great uses of the Curiosity Lab include but are not limited to:

  • prototyping
  • 3D printing
  • making art and crafts
  • building
  • fixing items
  • play
  • trying something new

Mission

We foster student learning, exploration, and engagement by providing tools for creative activities and by hosting co-curricular programming. In the spirit of cura personalis ("care for the whole person"), our programming encourages creative thinking, innovation, play, problem solving, cross-cultural awareness, and wellness. The Curiosity Lab provides opportunities for students to explore their creative potential in ways they may not otherwise be able to achieve due to limited options and socioeconomic barriers.

All students are welcome in the Curiosity Lab.

The Curiosity Lab is a student-centered space available for the entire John Carroll University community to use. It is designed to be a drop-in, creative work space where students can come any time to create something new. Most of our programs are designed for all skill levels--no experience necessary!

The Curiosity Lab may be louder than other areas in the library. Students who wish to study will find many quiet and collaborative study areas in study rooms and in spaces on the 2nd and 3rd floors.

Reservations

On rare occasions we may accept group reservations. The event's objectives must align with our creative mission and must not conflict with other programming scheduled. Groups that wish to use the space for creative purposes are welcome to stop by to use the space with others. Please contact University Librarian and Director of the Library, Julia Warga (jwarga@jcu.edu), for more information.

Location

We are located on the ground floor of the Grasselli Library & Breen Learning Center, next to The Den cafe, at John Carroll University in University Heights, OH.
