Help and Tips for using the library's search engine

AI research assistant logo

The Grasselli Search webpage includes the AI Research Assistant tool, built on OpenAI’s GPT--4o mini platform. What does it do?

  • Allows searching with "natural language" questions. Just ask your research questions using full sentences.
  • The "top" five relevant research sources are presented with abstracts.
  • An overview paragraph summarizing those five articles is created, showing the cited references inline.
  • Additional possible research questions are suggested.

Here's an example:

Pros and Cons of using AI Assistant

Pros

  • You can quickly focus in on main ideas for your topic.
  • The overview can clarify some ways ideas are connected.
  • This tool pulls directly from materials you can access or request from us. No hallucination citations.
  • You can become more comfortable with concepts that are new to you.
  • It will give you some academic language with which to frame your thinking
  • Suggested research prompts may lead you to consider additional directions to investigate

Cons

  • Results can be biased, as with any large language model AI system.
  • Results may not be specific enough, but you can always reword your questions to be more precise.
  • For some topics, an overview may not be generated (developers are working on this issue).
  • What the system considers as "relevant" may not be what you need.

Always evaluate AI results thoughtfully!
