Study Carrel Usage

Library carrels are provided to John Carroll University faculty members to facilitate research involving library materials and to provide quiet areas to graduate students working on dissertations or theses.

Faculty and graduate students must reserve carrels each new academic year. The application is available on-line at www.jcu.edu/library.htm. The carrel must be unoccupied for a minimum two-week period for maintenance and cleaning during the summer and a new application submitted for the upcoming academic year.

Library materials kept in carrels must be checked out through the circulation desk. Please remember to renew the materials when you receive a notice. All books not being checked out must be returned to the circulation desk within 24 hours.

Carrels should be locked whenever not in use. For security reasons, windows should not be obscured with paper or other materials. Study carrels are not to be used as storage areas for non-library materials or as personal office space. Grasselli Library and Breen Learning Center assumes no responsibility for loss or damage of personal possessions kept in carrels.

Library carrels are furnished with a chair and trash container. Furniture from other areas of the building should not be placed in the carrels. Heaters, mini refrigerators, heating elements and microwaves are also not permitted in carrels. Since carrels are reserved for research, you are asked to wear headphones when listening to CD players, laptops, tape recorders, etc.

The library reserves the right to enter and inspect the carrel at any time. Materials that have not been checked out at the circulation desk will be removed. Housekeeping personnel will be emptying trash placed in trash containers.

The cost of repairs for damage to the carrel is the responsibility of the person occupying the carrel.

Library hours of operation are strictly enforced. Please lock your carrel and exit the library prior to closing time. For security reasons, no one is to be in the building during non-operational hours. Your timely departure will ensure that library staff can leave when their shift ends.
