We're so excited about the major renovation of the library! All spaces are now fully open!
Originally dedicated in 1961, Grasselli Library doubled its capacity (to 100,000 square feet) in 1995 with the opening of the Breen Learning Center wing. Library faculty and staff provide research help to students, curate research tools and resources, and assist JCU faculty in instruction. The library supplies students with about 200,000 print books, bound periodicals, and audiovisual items, and more than one million electronic books and journals. It offers private and group study spaces, an electronic classroom, The Den coffee bar and lounge, and an open-air reading garden. A Computer Commons with PC and Mac computers is located adjacent to the Help Desk on the first floor.
In January 2010 the new Center for Digital Media (CDM) opened on the main floor of Grasselli Library. The CDM provides faculty and students with the hardware, software, and training they need to create sophisticated presentations, videos, graphics, and other forms of multimedia that can serve to enhance teaching, learning, research, and creativity.
Shortly thereafter, the JCU LaunchNET space opened on the first floor of the library building, to help JCU students and alums develop and refine entrepreneurial ideas, innovation, and creativity. In 2020, the Mastrantoni Family Student Success Commons, including Student Career Services and Student Academic Success, moved their offices into the library building. This provided a central location for students to obtain advising help, work on career strategies, do academic research, and study.
Then, in 2025, an extensive remodel of the library building was completed. The Creativity Lab was added, providing creative tools such as 3-D printers, sewing machines, Cricut "smart cutting" machine, Glowforge laser cutter, and more. The campus Writing Center and Student Accessibility Services offices also moved into the library buildings, adding to the range of support services to help students succeed. With each step, the Grasselli Library & Breen Learning Center continues to grow and as a hub of student-centered services and resources.
